When “Almost Finished” Turns Into a Crochet Plot Twist

You know that feeling when a project is so close to being finished, and you’re already imagining the proud moment you’ll set it out for everyone to see? That was me last night, happily stitching away, imagining the moment I’d finally get to showcase my little sleeping dog.
Then disaster struck.
I suddenly realised I’d used off-white instead of white.
For a good minute, I just stared at it in disbelief. How could I have missed that? I briefly thought I might turn it into two dogs instead - one white, one off-white - but of course, I don’t have enough of this yarn left. And to make matters worse, it’s one I bought from overseas!
When I told my mum, she laughed and said, “Dogs have all sorts of shades in their fur, no one will notice!” And she’s probably right. Real dogs aren’t perfectly white anyway. But after staring at yarn for hours, the tiniest shade difference suddenly feels like a full-blown catastrophe.
Still, I think I’ll fix it, if only for my own peace of mind. Another project on hold! But that’s the charm (and the chaos) of handmade work. Every piece has its little story, even the almost-white dogs.
Have you ever had a crafting disaster turn into a happy accident (or at least a good story)? I’d love to hear about it in the comments. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who occasionally wrestles with wayward yarn and colour choices!
